When you live by the beach, it’s hard to resist the temptation to go out boating, surfing, swimming and tanning every spare chance you get. However, the sun damage potential is great unless you lather on the sun-block, bring an umbrella and wear protective clothing, researchers warn. Think tanning beds are any safer? Guess again! Researchers at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research in New Zealand ran a comprehensive report looking at 21 different studies and found that people who began using tanning beds under the age of 35 doubled their risk of getting melanoma. While some sunlight and melanin production is natural, choosing wisely can yield younger looking skin, easily subtracting ten years from your looks.

Tanning beds are cosmetic devices that emit ultraviolet radiation to darken the skin, without the use of lotions or tanning bronzers. Regular tanning beds include a varying number of phosphor bulbs that emit UV light; depending on the complexity of the machine, the number of lamps varies, with commercial beds having more lamps. Very specialized tanning beds incorporate quartz lamps instead of phosphor lamps, but they also need a combination of filters and reflectors for proper functioning.
As the name implies, tanning beds call for the user to assume a lying position, as opposed to tanning booths where one has to stand. Another distinct feature between tanning beds and booths is the higher power output generated by beds.

The most advantageous alternative to beach tanning is indoor tanning, particularly since it can be used all year round without one depending on the season for a nice golden bronze. Even so, extreme exposure is often signaled since despite the many indoor tanning tips, people keep forgetting to stay vigilant in their use of artificial tanning tools. Hence, besides the waste of time and money users also increase the chances of damaging their dermis and getting older more rapidly.

Used tanning beds make a less costly option for people who’d like to open a tanning salon but are stuck with a rather limited budget. The problem with used tanning beds is that they involve the same amount of risks as a pre-owned car for instance. Like with any other purchase the manufacturing date, the technical characteristics, certifications, warranty – if any – and other built in features need to be checked and discussed. We know who would purchase used tanning beds, but the question remains about who would sell them and why? The most legitimate thing that comes to mind is malfunction, as it is normal for used tanning beds to present functionality problems.
