You probably know that stretch marks develop wherever you expand quickly. When skin is stretched, there is pulling action in the skin fibers and this action causes the skin fibers to break. Thus, areas where skin is often pulled apart, such as breasts, upper arms, tummy, lower back, behind, hips and thighs tend to develop stretch marks.

Stretch marks appear when the body is growing at a rate much faster than the skin is growing or if it is being stretched beyond its limit. Other names for stretch marks are striae rubra, striae distensae, striae atrophicans, and striae alba.
